Talking qbout cc’s ass on tumblr insyead of adult things with real people. HAPPY 2023,!!!!
January 2012
Hahshahaha a friend tried to use my computer and i yelled “no, don’t!!” as he was opening it because it was at that precise moment i remembered that i have a zoomed in picture of chris colfer’s ass up on my screen.
while i’m not a huge fan of overly-bumbly fail!blaine simply because a) he is not an idiot, b) he seems reasonably competent in most things, and c) he is quick enough to figure out at least the basics of those things in which he is not reasonably competent, i still think it’s reasonable for him to not know how to cook a lot of things.
i have friends that had to fend for themselves a lot in high school and beyond and boy did they learn the secrets of a good microwave meal. they had a couple of “specialties”, sure, but were too focused on other endeavors (especially someone as well-rounded and dedicated to different clubs and schoolwork as blaine) to put much time into learning how to cook. i have one friend knew/knows how to make chili, crab rangoons, and a cheesy tuna soup. and that’s it. another knows omelettes, mac and cheese with peas, and jambalaya from a box. both of these people called or texted me asking how to make rice and pasta.
not to mention that cooking for one doesn’t necessarily inspire a person to pull out all the culinary stops. where kurt felt the need to focus on cooking to feed him and his dad increasingly healthy things, if blaine was alone a lot i think he was probably ok with a hot pocket or an amy’s bowl supplemented with a piece of fruit or something while he focused on music or rugby. not to mention if he was playing rugby it’s reasonable to assume he is at least edging on upper middle class so he probably has a long history with take-out. i be he knows his thai food delivery driver pretty well.
Yeah, personally I just see him as someone who can make standard meals like the one’s I’ve listed (or…idk, I consider grilled chicken and fettuccine alfredo and BBQ salmon and rice pretty simple meals to make, but maybe others don’t view them that way?), and he seems like the sort of meticulous guy who would care about what he’s consuming (though not to the same extent as Kurt). (also, I’m pretty sure it’s polo and possibly fencing that Blaine does, just for clarification’s sake). Maybe it’s just a part of my headcanon for his parents, but I don’t think HotPockets would be something you’d find in Blaine’s house (I tend to think of them as probably frowning down on that kind of food - like my aunt, who always prides herself on telling everyone everything about the nutritional value and fat content of what they’re eating and subtly judging them if it doesn’t reach their standards, or possibly because they’re snobs and pride themselves on affording more expensive food).
And in any case, it’s still a far stretch from what I see in some fanfic, where Blaine is constantly burning things or covered in batter and Kurt just chuckles at him indulgently and cleans him up, silly little boy.
whoops, thanks for correcting me about the rugby thing. i was thinking polo in my mind, but mixed the words up.
and thinking about it, you’re right. hot pockets are probably too gross (both nutritionally and in that “low-brow” way) to be a regular fixture in blaine’s house and stomach (good point on the “meticulous” part).
i think what people are drawing on for fail!cook blaine is that kurt has traditionally been shown to be graceful and knowing and when blaine was first introduced he was shown to be a little more oblivious to details. i think those details (and oh-so-many more that bother me about general fandom characterization) were pounced upon and exaggerated and are now being played up for farcical laughs in fanfic instead of drawing on the more nuanced character development we have now for more well-rounded laughs.
It seems like a big thing in most fanfics that Kurt is this, like, master chef who does all the cooking and is really good at it while Blaine is just hopeless and can’t accomplish anything. I get why Kurt would be a good cook, but why wouldn’t Blaine? I feel like Blaine’s been on his own for a lot of meals since he started high school and, so, would be really good at cooking due to the fact that he would have to make his own meals all the time. =/
It is now my headcanon that while Kurt likes to experiment and make fancy things like souffles and pates, Blaine is very good at making quality day-to-day meals (spaghetti and meatballs, chicken and pasta, salmon and rice, garden salads) for one or two people (himself, then him and Kurt), and the thought hurts my heart a little.
Also, he and Kurt enjoy cooking together a lot. And Blaine does not fail and get flour or icing or whatever all over himself like a toddler.
